Women’s health care programs are at the heart and forefront of the well-being for the entire family. Women are often referred to as the glue that holds families together. As such, issues that affect their health have an enormous impact on the well-being of the entire family unit. In terms of health, it’s important to not only look at just the physical , but also mental aspects of well-being for women.
Some people advise that there are specific exercises that can help women to achieve the right balance in their lives. Others stress the importance of good nutrition. Unfortunately, there has been a concentration on the cosmetic aspect of the health industry rather than real well-being. Women can end up with poor confidence because of the way that they are required to dress like size zero models. There are also some traditional programs such as weight loss yoga for women. These have worked but they could also benefit from an update.
Health issues that concern women
Women often read lifestyle magazines and compare themselves to famous celebrities that have a team of specialists to make them look gorgeous. However, these magazines also offer an insight into the serious issues that ought to be at the top of the agenda for the improvement of the general health status of women. Some of the issues that have been identified include:
- Cholesterol: Today, the North American diet which people commonly consume often leads to an excessive intake of cholesterol. Butter and fatty foods are becoming the norm and it is only who who educate themselves who are getting information about the dangers of high cholesterol. Even where they are given the information about the dangers, women’s busy lifestyle might mean that they do not have enough time to implement a good dietary program.
- Though once considered a man’s disease, heart disease is now the number one killer of women! The American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women campaign has been raising awareness for this fact.
- Weight control: Current advice is that women should avoid being overweight or obese–of course, the same advice can be said for men too. - Physical fitness: It has long been recognized that the physical fitness of a woman will have an impact on her general health. Therefore, women are encouraged to take their physical fitness regime very seriously.
- Body image: The pressures from the celebrity culture have meant that many women have negative feelings about their body. This can lead them into unhealthy lifestyle choices including perpetual dieting and anorexia.
- Pre and post natal care: There is limited implementation of good practices when it comes to the care of women around the time when they give birth to babies. Often they are coping with issues such as depression or a body that will simply not return to the old state that it had been in.
- Reproductive health: Depending on their access to healthcare which is largely determined by the country in which they reside as well as socioeconomic factors, women may or may not have access to adequate pre and post-natal care.
