If you are obese (a body mass index or BMI of more than 30 is obesity) or overweight (a body mass index or BMI of 25-30 is considered overweight), you may have tried a few different methods of reducing body weight, but failed every time, than it is time to think little different and also take different method to reduce your obesity or excess body weight. This method I am talking about is mainly for obese or overweight women and not very effective for others (obese men).
Taking calcium along with vitamin D supplementation may help reduce obesity (by causing fat loss), but only if the calcium levls of the obese woman is already low. In case of normal calcium level in blood, taking calcium along with vitamin D supplementation may not help reduce body weight. This was the result of a Canadian study conducted on obese women with calorie restricted diet.
All the obese women in the study were getting (consuming) lower than recommended (800 mg per day) daily intake of calcium which is 1,000 mg per day for women of 19 to 50 years of age. Half of the study population was randomly given calcium and vitamin D supplementation to provide 1200 mg of calcium a day and the rest were given placebo. The women given calcium and vitamin D supplementation had greater loss of weight than those with placebo and especially in those women who were consuming less than 600 mg of calcium a day before the study.
How calcium and vitamin D supplementation help reducing body weight?
The reason for greater weight loss in women with calcium and vitamin D supplementation was not clear, but may be due to low appetite for fatty foods in those women. Because, the women who were given calcium and vitamin D supplementation ate less fat in the test meal conducted at the end of the study, than they have eaten in the test meal conducted at the beginning of the study. But the placebo group ate the same amount of fat in both test meals (one before starting of study and one after the completion of study).
The possible explanation of reduce fat intake is that, human brain can detect low calcium and try to compensate it by increasing food intake by increasing appetite, which work against weight loss. Hence, sufficient calcium intake prevent desire to eat more.
So, if you consume less than recommended 1, 000 mg of calcium a day and you are obese or overweight and trying to loss weight, give a try with calcium and vitamin D supplementation.
