3 Festive Winter 5Ks to Keep You Moving When the Temperature Drops

In the winter, you’d probably rather just never leave your house, let alone run a 5K marathon. Sure, the weather might be a bit colder and you’re probably recovering from the holidays, but what better way to work off stress and keep those cookie pounds at bay than participating in a fun winter running experience? Before you shun running for good when the temperature drops, check out the following most popular 5Ks coming up this season.

Frozen Foot Winter Series

Are you making a resolution to run a 5K? If so, get started on it early at the Frozen Foot Winter Series located at Elizabethtown College in Pennsylvania. This beautiful track stretches through the quaint campus and all along the cute local neighborhoods surrounding the school. The race takes place on three winter dates: January 20, February 17 and March 17. All proceeds from the event go toward the Christ Church UCC Youth Group; however, there are also two cash prizes up for grabs for the overall male and female division and the masters male and female.

Movin’ Shoes Frosty 5K

The Frosty 5K takes place on February 16 right on the Capitol Square beneath the picturesque Wisconsin State Capitol Building. The race is unique in that participants can either run or walk the distance while earning money for the Fit City Kids program, which is designed to help local children stay active in the wintertime. The track runs past famous Madison landmarks like the Overture Center for the Arts, State Street and University of Wisconsin’s Kohl Center, ultimately finishing at the snow-capped Capitol dome. Participants are given the opportunity to win tons of great prizes, enjoy complimentary hot chocolate and cookies and relish in awesome scheduled entertainment.

SnowDash Xtreme

You can literally be dashing through the snow at Colorado’s most intense race yet, the SnowDash Xtreme in Winter Park. The race is scheduled to take place on January 26 and is designed for the most dedicated and thrill-seeking outdoors enthusiasts across the country to compete in an epic event. This race isn’t just your average 5K; the track includes plenty of exciting obstacles along the way, such as inclined snow piles, powder pits and steep terrain. The party atmosphere of beer and loud music will be just what you need for that extra push through these tough obstacles.

Before heading off to your 5K, make a survival list of all the essential items you’ll need for your trip. Adidas running shoes are must-have for maintaining comfort, support and warmth throughout your experience, while skins or tights are a good way to stay warm without adding a whole lot of bulk to your outfit. Have a Camelbak water pouch with you to stay hydrated on your run and always have a sweatband or towel handy for staying dry.

Even though your couch and Snuggie might be calling your name when the temperature drops, remaining physically active during the winter makes the cold a lot more bearable. Don’t be afraid to try something new with a winter 5K this year!
