4 Diet and Fitness Products that Don’t Hold Water

Last year consumers spent over 61 billion dollars on weight loss and fitness products. Divided up between the millions trying to lose weight, it rounds out to a whopping $800 per weight watcher. There is certainly no lack of gimmicky products or fad diets that promise to help you lose weight while eating all of the foods you like, but here are our favorites from the past few years:

1. Sensa

Sensa is a weight loss product that promises to be both easy and effective. You shake the salt shaker like box over any food you want to eat and it will allegedly make you eat less and help you lose weight. Its commercials use an animated stick figure as the primary endorser to convince buyers their product can help you lose up to 30 lbs in just 6 months, just by shaking the contents over your food.

The flakes contain a mixture of maltodextrin, tricalcium phosphate, silica, and either a sweet or salty flavor that “tricks” your body by using your senses in to thinking that you are satiated. Although the area of our hypothalamus that determines fullness can be controlled by scent and tastes, so far Sensa’s lofty claims have not been substantiated by an independent study or industry journals. Sensa’s creator, neurologist Dr. Alan Hirsch has published over 200 studies detailing his own research on the effects of scent and taste on human behavior. Sensa comes in 12 different flavors at a whopping $59.99 for a one month supply.
