5 Stress-Free Solutions for Maintaining Good Health

There are many factors that can have a negative effect on your good health and well-being. Fortunately, there are some quick and simple ways to improve lifestyles, that can lead to better health.

1. Unwind before going to bed

It is recommended that adults should try to get between seven and eight hours of sleep per night. Sleep is vital for a healthy metabolism, brain function and for regulating moods.

There are a few simple steps that can aid better sleep. It is important to unwind before going to bed, rather than trying to settle down still thinking about work, or any other distractions from the day.

Making a ‘to-do’ list for the following day is helpful to some, as they are less likely to stay awake thinking about tasks that need to be done once the next day has been planned. Taking a warm bath before bed can also help a person to relax and unwind.

2. Incorporate gentle exercise into daily routines

Getting regular exercise is important to good health and well-being  Some may feel that they don’t have time to exercise regularly, as they associate regular exercise with joining a gym, or attending a weekly class. These are good ways to get exercise if time and money is not an issue, but there are other ways that may fit into a daily routine more easily.

Walking is a very gentle, yet effective form of exercise. Even walking an extra 15 minutes per day can be beneficial. This can be done before or after work, or during a lunch break. Those who live close to work may even want to walk instead of taking the car or public transport.

Exercise can also be done while watching television, in the form of gentle stretching, sit-ups or lifting weights.

As well as the physical benefits, exercise can also ease stress, improve moods and increase self-esteem. Lack of exercise can increase the risk of numerous medical conditions, including diabetes and heart problems.

Before starting any form of exercise, it is recommended that medical advice is sought.

3. Eat little and often

Most are aware that a healthy diet should include five portions of fruit and vegetable per day, as well as being low in saturated fat, sugar and salt. However, there are other aspects to healthy eating.

Large meals can cause problems, as energy levels are lowered while the body struggles to digest them. Although eating a large meal will initially increase blood sugar levels, this will drop once the meal is digested.

Eating little and often keeps energy levels stable, therefore avoiding the peaks and troughs. Having healthy snacks such as fruit, rice crackers or natural cereal bars in between meals will mean that smaller portions at meal times will be sufficient.

Swap caffeine for herbal tea

Consuming drinks with caffeine is not harmful in moderation, but many adults may be taking in too much caffeine. Excessive caffeine intake can cause insomnia, anxiety and depression.

Drinking herbal tea instead of coffee or fizzy drinks not only reduces caffeine consumption, but should also lower calorie intake, as most contain very few calories.

This can be something as simple as taking a bath before bedtime, a walk in the evening or reading a book.

By following these simple steps, it is possible to improve both physical and mental well-being. This can be beneficial for a person’s ability to carry out their daily tasks, as well as having a positive impact on personal and professional relationships.
