5 Tips For a Good Night’s Sleep

If we don’t rest our bodies properly and get a good night’s sleep, it can affect virtually everything we do in the rest of our lives. We are less active, less productive at work, mentally less sharp and we may suffer physically because of it.

Ensuring adequate sleep involves many things from choosing the right mattress to preparing yourself mentally for sleep time.

Here are 5 tips to sleep well:

5. Shop Around For The Right Mattress

Buying the right mattress means firstly knowing what is comfortable and supportive for you.

Someone with back pain may need a medium-firm mattress; people with allergies may need to avoid certain materials; you may have a preference for memory foam over inner-springs.

The point is that you probably have many requirements – make a list of the qualities your mattress should have, then think about how long you want it to last, then decide on an approximate budget and start shopping around for models that fit the bill – offline and online.

Trying a mattress before buying will ensure it meets what you need and will give you a good night’s sleep. If you still want to do more research, there will likely be a lot of information on the Internet about any mattress you are interested in – choose carefully and do your research.

4. Make Your Bedroom A Place to Sleep

It’s tempting these days to turn our bedrooms into offices, home cinemas and multimedia havens, but if you have trouble resting try to go back to the days when your bedroom was just a place to sleep in.

Take the TV and DVD player out; don’t take the laptop or phone in there when you are ready to sleep;  and don’t be tempted to snack there either.

All these measures will help you reclaim your bedroom and when you enter your body will begin to know that you are heading off to rest and will help you prepare mentally for that.

3. Routines

Another great way to prepare yourself for a good night’s sleep is to keep to routines. If you like a cup of milk or chamomile tea before you head to bed then that’s fine – keep doing that – it tells your mind and body that you are beginning to wind down and get ready for bed.

Part of the skill is in training your mind and your body to know when you want to sleep – you don’t want your mind racing about all kinds of things when you want to be settling down for the night.

Keeping to a routine with your sleep and wake times will also help with this. Try to get up around the same time each day and go to bed at around the same time too. Your body will appreciate the natural rhythm this brings to your day.

2. Natural Remedies and Diet

There are some great natural remedies you can try if you are having problems sleeping; of course consult with a doctor first, but try to avoid medication. Some of the natural remedies include valerian root pills, tryptophan supplements, or oral spray and melatonin pills.

Some foods like bananas, figs, dates, milk, whole grain crackers and yogurt contain tryptophan, so eating them in the evening may also help promote rest.

1. Exercise

Exercising has many benefits for keeping a healthy body – one of the side benefits is that it will also help good rest. Try to exercise regularly at least 4 or 5 times a week and you should notice your quality and duration of rest improving over time.

Above are just 5 ways you can help promote better sleep – you see how diverse they are? From the right mattress and environment for the bedroom, to diet and exercise and psychological factors – sleep doesn’t always come easily to people…..some may need a little help!

Always test a mattress! People who take 15 minutes to test a bed in the store are as happy with their choices as those who took the mattress for a ‘test drive’ for days or weeks. Also, some hotels advertise that they have special beds. If you’re interested in that brand of bed just spend a night at that hotel.

    Hi Ray!

    I love the photo!

These are very good tips. I find that when I exercise I always get some good sleep and don’t let it be raining. I really get good sleep then.
