5 Types of Food Addiction and Their Remedies

We hear about addiction and the first thing that strikes our mind is drugs.

It can be in any form – drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, etc. but unfortunately, there are other kinds of addictions too. And those addictions are both underrated which helps them to get into your lifestyle much more easily and with time, they prove much difficult to get rid of.

Food addiction for example is a very serious kind of addiction and it goes pretty much unnoticed and when you finally become aware that you have fallen to a particular kind of food addiction, getting rid of it seems so much more difficult. It requires determination and discipline to fight this kind of addiction but surely with time and persistence it is possible to beat it.

Food addiction is very unhealthy; it can cause obesity, malnutrition even to the otherwise healthy looking person and a number of other diseases like teeth problems etc.

Here in this article, we will discuss the common types of food addiction and how to get rid of them.

Sugar Addiction – This is most common type of food addiction. Sugar, as it tastes good and is easily available in the kitchen, can get anyone addicted to it in no time. Yes, sugar addiction is real, and since sugar is bad for health in many ways it causes serious health problems to the addict.

Remedy: stay away from sugar and try replacing it with honey which is a natural sweetener. Try combining it with fruits which acts as other natural sweeteners.

Caffeine Addiction – Think a bit of coffee will help, and some more with help to stay awake for a bit longer into the night. And so it continues and at some point it becomes a habit and an addiction.

Remedy: try replacing caffeinated drinks with plain drinking water. Water is excellent when it comes to keep you fresh during the night, helps you to stay awake. Wash your face if you have to get rid of the sleepy feeling, but don’t take coffee for that purpose.

Chocolate Addiction – think a bit of dark chocolate might even be good for health, but if eating chocolate becomes a habit that you cannot resist, it surely means that problem is coming. Resisting such urges is hard, taste comes in the way and often beats your control and you finally give in.

Remedy: Try portion control. Eat chocolate, but in smaller amount. Keep resisting some days and when you fall for it, make sure the portion is smaller. Keep the persistence and slowly stop eating it completely.

Snack Addiction – Do you get up in the middle of the night and start looking for some junk food to keep munching on? This is not because you are hungry; it is because you want some tasty junk food to keep you occupied with. Early morning, before meals, middle of the night… these are not real eating times; this is done only to satisfy your taste, because you made a habit of it.

Remedy: eat real foods, foods that keep your stomach full for longer times. When it comes to snacking, try apples. It will keep you full and slowly you will stop feeling the urge to snack, because apples are not as tasty as chips.

Soft Drink Addiction – Soda can be very addictive. You might not notice at first, but when you do you will realize that the soda consumption only increases with time. Check your fridge, you will find some bottles of your favorite soft drinks kept for you. Whenever you feel like, you open it and drink some. There is no count, every time you go out for eating you end up drinking more of these sodas. And it goes on and on.

Remedy: carry water bottles with you when you go out. Drink as much water as you need, keep yourself hydrated so that the need to drink soft drink goes away. Keep enough clear drinking water in your fridge, and when you feel thirsty, drink water not soda.

    Carb addiction can’t be broken

      sure it can – stop eating carbs for a week and the cravings will magically disappear

      You have to be more specific about what you mean by carbs. I believe you refer to processed foods. There is nothing bad in carbohydrates, proteins, fats, sugars, etc as produced by nature (aside from substances that could be poisonous for humans). The problem is how we process them for consumption and the quantity / frequency in which we ingest them. Most important is to understand how your own body / mind react to food, be disciplined on maintain a balance.

    Food addiction is often directly related to emotional trauma. This was shown by Dr. Dunkley in England. The food today has also been injected with many chemicals that can be addictive when consumed often
