6 Mistakes Which Cause Unhealthy Skin

Our skin can be very fickle. One day it can be perfect, the next it’s dull and lifeless. But a few changes in your day-to-day routine can give your complexion a new glow and prevent a number of skin conditions.

1. Too Much Salt

No not in your diet, on your face! Many face scrubs contain sea salt which works as an exfoliant. But perhaps it exfoliates too well. The problem is it has very rough edges which aren’t kind on your skin. They do remove tough skin layers but also cause irritation and can scratch people with extra sensitive skin. Try using sugar based exfoliants. They don’t dehydrate the skin as much and aren’t as sharp.

2. Excessively Hot Water

We all love a nice warm bath. But getting in a bath or washing you face with water which is too hot can have a number of disadvantages. It can really dehydrate and dry out your skin. It can also obviously cause damage to your skin if it’s excessively hot. Water only needs to be lukewarm to open up your pores. So just turn it down a few degrees next time!

3. Smoking & Alcohol

If you want a glowing complexion you’re going to have to keep smoking and alcohol to a minimum. Although they do it in different ways, both can cause you to age faster than you would normally. They can narrow your blood vessels and prevent all the essential nutrients from getting to your skin. We all like to indulge sometimes, but we’ve got one word for you – moderation!

4. A Sedentary Lifestyle

The cardiovascular benefits of exercise are well-known. But this also has a positive knock on effect with your circulation too. It helps in nourishing the skin cells, and removing waste products. A session at the gym is ideal – it can help flush cellular debris out of the skin, but even going for a walk and staying active can help.

5. No Sunscreen

The sun really can make your skin age much faster. Don’t believe us? Look at the picture of this trucker. For nearly 30 years the left side of his face had much more sun than the right side. You can see how much of a difference it makes. Sunscreen is important to prevent all sorts of skin damage. Even when it’s cool the sun can still be strong. Don’t take risks! The sun can start to damage your skin after just 10 minutes.

6. Addiction to Cosmetics

Lots of us will be guilty of this one. Give your cosmetics time to work and don’t go from one brand to another too quickly. They take time to work. Think what all those different chemicals are doing to your face. They can cause irritations, reactions and blemishes. At least try to be consistent. It also doesn’t hurt to give your face one or two days a week off from make up. It’s hard we know but it really can do wonders for your skin.

    Your eating habits can also have a negative impact on your skin. If you don’t eat the right things you will not get the vitamins that your cells need to grow and develop.
