7 Essential Free-Weight Exercises For The Upper Body

7. Bent-Over Rows

These are a bit tricky to do right because poor form can be bad for your back, but when done properly and consistently they give you the back and side of an Olympic rower, hence the name. With your feet about as far apart as your shoulders bend over and grab a dumbbell in each hand so that your palms are facing each other. Do not hunch your back at all.

Keep your knees slightly bent to provide extra support and stability. Pull the weights towards your side in a motion similar to the way you would row a boat. Make sure your backbone is straight at all times and support most of your body weight with your knees.
