Aloe Vera, Obesity & Type 2 Diabetes

Many of the health benefits associated with Aloe Vera have been attributed to the polysaccharides contained in the gel of the leaves. These benefits include:

  • promotion of wound healing,
  • anti-fungal activity,
  • hypoglycemic or antidiabetic effects
  • anti-inflammatory effects,
  • anti-cancer effects,
  • immunomodulatory effects, and
  • gastroprotective properties

To that list, we can now add an anti-obesity effect.

According to this study, an aloe vera supplement was able to:

  • lower blood sugar levels
  • lower insulin levels
  • suppress levels of obesity-induced inflammation found in adipose tissue and the liver, and
  • increase levels of anti-inflammatory cytokines in adipose tissue and the liver

As a result, the researchers are all atwitter about the potential use of Aloe Vera as a treatment for Type 2 Diabetes and obesity related inflammation.

Great article, I know a lot of people with diabetes and once the baby boomers hit that age of 50+ the prevalence of diabetes is going to sky rocket.

I’ve always wondered how safe aloe vera is a food supplement. There’s a link in Wikipedia that says it can be toxic, yet presumably many people have been taking it without ill effects.

I had heard about aloe vera juice as a cancer prevention technique from a doctor. The doctor said that he had seen it help patients who were in remission prevent cancer from coming back. I know he couldn’t possibly know that this was the reason why, but I was curious if anyone knows anything about this because my cousin’s girlfriend has had cancer in the past and is in remission at the time being. I just wanted to know if anyone had used the juice and had positive results.

Huh. I, too, didn’t know aloe vera are considered in today’s use for weight management. I only know this for hair maintenance. Good to know about this and will definitely keep a look out for more information about its health benefits.

Aloe vera also may interact with anti-diabetic medications and cause an increased risk of hypoglycemia, otherwise known as dangerously low blood sugar levels. Aloe vera and diabetes medications should be used cautiously. …

Aloe vera is also effective in hair and scalp problems like dandruff and hair fall. It provides optimum nutrition to the scalp and maintains its health.
It is a natural moisturizer that maintains the moisture balance of skin and keeps it soft & supple.I keep using aloe vera.

      Hi Peter,

What do you mean? Have you tried it already? I was really curious with this. I have tried slimming fads and some took effect but not the results that I was expecting.

      Hi Earnest

There are many places that you can buy aloe products from; high street stores, online or from network marketing companies.

Just somethings to look out for. The main ingredient should be aloe barbadensis- this is the most superior plant. Many products have only a little aloe in them for look or ask what the main ingredient is, if it is aqua, then it is unlikely that there is much benefit from the aloe.

Be careful also with the stabalisers, because the good qualities can be destroyed by chemical and heat processes. Aloe is a bit like a banana in that once it is exposed to the air it will go off; so look for products that claim a patented stabalising process and one that is preperaed to put their money where their mouth is and offer a full refund if it doesn’t work for you. (even if you have used it all up!)

Another thing to look out for is what is used in the product. It is the gel inside the plant that has the benefits, not the leaf becuase the leaf has the toxins. So anything that says ‘whole leaf’ is probably not great

Hope this helps – Dougs advice is great – I really look forward to reading his articles particularly about aloe as I love the stuff.

      Al the best
