August 8 is not a random day. All over the world people celebrate that it’s worldwide Happiness Happens Day. Happiness Happens Day has been around since 1999. The day was brought to life by the secret society of happy people. Its founder, Pamela Gail Johnson, chose August 8 as this was the day she welcomed her first official member to her community.
She started the society because she wanted to see more happy people. Johnson had a few simple purposes: to make people enthusiastic about recognizing their happy moments, to stop spoiling other people’s ideas and to encourage other people to talk about their moments of happiness more often. The Secret Society of Happy People has thousands of members living all around the world. These people will celebrate happiness on this day and so can you. How to be happy? Here are a few tips:
Don’t think you can buy happiness. On the contrary, having a lot of money will not make you happier. Trying to find happiness through pleasure will not cut it either. Indulging on drinking or eating will make you feel good for a while but in the long run it will not have much of an effect on your well-being.
Appreciate what you have. If you compare yourself too much with others, chances are you’ll start to get jealous. The best remedy is to appreciate what you have. Appreciate your food, friends and even a smile from a stranger on the street and don’t be too hard on yourself.
Make choices that are right for you. Take a moment to reflect on what things you enjoy doing. If you can change your life for the better, go for it. Many people are too scared to live the life they want to live. If you know what you want out of life go for it. Shake your fear off and make choices that are right for you and don’t be overly concerned about what other people might think of your behaviour.
Live in the present. If you think about the past a lot you’ll start to feel depressed and thinking about the future will cause you to feel anxious. Your mind will be a lot calmer if it only has to focus on the here and now. Therefore you should stop thinking about the past or the future and start thinking about now: August 8th Happiness happens today!
