Developing Proactive Plans to Fight Mesothelioma

When someone is diagnosed with any kind of cancer, or mesothelioma in particular, it is natural to feel fear, anxiety and even hopelessness. Once treatment options are explained, however, and surgery or medication brings an initial level of comfort, many patients decide to do everything possible to maintain a measure of health and fitness while battling the disease.

An overall positive attitude, with affirmative statements and thoughts, will go a long way toward improving anyone’s health. Limiting time spent on negative thoughts or with negative people will help to reduce stress and anxiety.

Improve Health With Good Nutrition

Although mesothelioma is not caused by a bad diet, making healthy food choices helps in the fight against cancer, and may even increase the mesothelioma life expectancy. Providing the body with a diet rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants may help in many ways, from supporting the immune system to giving needed strength and energy. A healthy diet is probably the single most helpful plan a mesothelioma patient can follow for himself or herself.

A side effect of cancer treatment for mesothelioma is nausea, and several changes in diet may help ease this problem. When stomach upset occurs, eating dry foods such as toast and crackers can help to “settle” the stomach. Bland foods such as pudding, rice, oatmeal or gelatin desserts can help with acid reflux.

According to nutritionists, leafy and dark green vegetables are beneficial in the treatment of mesothelioma because of their vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. They also have powerful enzymes called phytochemicals that help rid the body of carcinogens–cancer-causing agents–and block enzymes that help to activate them.

Berries also have cancer-fighting nutrients called phyto-nutrients, and a recent study using extracts of loganberries, strawberries, cranberries, raspberries, blackberries and blueberries has shown that the extract of each had the ability to kill cancer cells. Garlic is another nutrient recommended by nutritionists because production of allicin is beneficial for mesothelioma patients.

Improvement Through Exercise

Exercise at an appropriate level can increase fitness, mental acuity, and bring about improvements in sleep, oxygen levels and general quality of life. The attending physician should be consulted before starting an exercise regimen and care should be taken not to exercise to the point of exhaustion. A physical therapist can recommend exercises to provide strength and better balance if unsteadiness is a problem.

Most people know that a person’s favorite music has a positive influence on mood and energy. Recently, however, researchers have discovered that exercising with music improves endurance and positive cardiovascular results, as well.

Diet, exercise, a positive attitude and even finding faith in a higher power may all contribute to a longer mesothelioma life expectancy for someone afflicted with the disease.

Everyone can benefit from making the best of each day and living the fullest life possible one day at a time.

The major cause of mesothelioma is exposure to asbestos, and reducing, banning and producing asbestos products can drastically reduce the incidence of mesothelioma.
