A Diet for Fertility — Foods that Increase Your Chances of Conceiving

When women decide to get pregnant, they usually want it to happen right away. But, getting pregnant (interesting to know is that the Danish term is Bliv gravid) is not as easy as it seems. In fact, it may take a little work or some time before you finally conceive.   It’s understandable that you feel frustrated and disappointed every time the pregnancy test shows a single line. But do think twice before drowning your sorrows in a mound of ice cream. While there is no food that can make a baby, some food choices may help boost your chances of conceiving.

So how exactly does it work? Well, one of the most common causes of infertility involves hormonal imbalances. By eating healthy, not only will you feel happier and healthier. Proper diet also helps correct the hormonal imbalance in your body, naturally boosting chances of pregnancy.

Infertility is sometimes associated with polycystic ovarian syndrome – a condition that is often related to above average body mass index. Maybe all you need is to shed off a few pounds to make the pregnancy dream a reality!

According to recent studies, there are certain food items than can affect a woman’s fertility. Many doctors even believe that some food choices may have direct impact the chances of conception. Although there are no solid proof that some foods can better your chances of pregnancy, the food groups that are involved in these studies are the same foods that you need for a healthy body. So, why not give these foods a shot?

Vegetables are rich in folic acid and are packed with all the nutrients your body needs. Many studies have shown that intake of food items that are low in zinc causes infertility. Vegetables high in zinc include mushrooms and spinach.

According to some research, foods rich in vitamin B and C help boost chances of pregnancy. Fruits are chock full of these nutrients without adding all those extra calories. Stock up on plenty of fruits so you can make a sane, healthy choice when the cravings start to hit.

Whole grain foods

Whole wheat and whole grain foods are way better, not to mention healthier than refined food products. How do you know which ones are unrefined? Go for the ones with brownish color. Complex carbohydrates are known to help speed up weight loss.

Vegetable proteins

Vegetable proteins are a good alternative to animal proteins. If you want to get pregnant fast, it is necessary that you reduce your fat in take. Sometimes, taking your protein from animals also means taking their fat.  It is best to take your protein from vegetables such as tofu, soy beans and other soy products.

Healthy fats

There is such a thing as healthy fats and foods that are rich in this nutrient include olive oil, avocado and nuts. Taking in healthy fats are also helpful in weight loss.

Fish is a good source of low-fat protein and is rich in omega-3 which is good for the heart. Some researchers have also discovered that some shellfish can have unfavorable effect on fertility.  You might want to go easy on oysters and clams if you are a seafood lover.
