Everything You Need to Know About Cleansing

[box type=”note”]Editor Note: While doing research for an article on cleansing, I realized that as much as I “think” I know about cleansing, there are others with a far better understanding of the subject. One of those individuals is Brenda Watson. Luckily for us Hive readers, I was able to convince/bribe Brenda to write a very, very thorough introduction to cleansing. Enjoy.[/box]

Cleansing and detoxification are essential to a healthy digestive tract and maintaining good liver function. When I developed the first program on internal cleansing, it was focused on parasite elimination. The product had been heavily researched, as I had used the formula for years in my digestive care clinics before entering the natural products industry for the health food store market. Once the product was on the market, some consumers called who had reactions like headache or flu-like symptoms.

In my digestive care clinics, anyone taking this kind of formula would have also done colon hydrotherapy before or during the cleanse. Now, people were purchasing the product from a health food store without having cleansed before. I soon realized what was happening.

People who had not first addressed cleansing of the seven channels of elimination experienced these cleansing reactions because of what is known as “die off”. Die off occurs when harmful organisms die in the intestines and give off toxins. This is also known as Herxheimer reaction. I responded by formulating a Total Body Cleanse program and always suggest people take it before any type of microbial cleansing, whether for parasites or Candida. This is very important in the process of healing.

As I continued to lecture and consult, and as the science around cleaning developed, I formulated more targeted cleansing programs for the liver and kidneys, as well as specific heavy metal detoxing programs. I put these all into a step-by-step process so they could be utilized over a time period to made the program easier for people to follow, as well as thorough enough to prepare the body for deeper cleansing. Please remember that it takes time for the body to heal from the inside out.

My hope, for you, is that the Steps of Cleansing program is a transformative program for your health. It needs to be incorporated into a full program of healthy eating, exercise, and plenty of water intake.

Step One: Total Body Cleansing

There are two areas to address when beginning a total body cleanse:

  1. the cleansing of the colon,
  2. addressing the remaining channels of elimination – liver, blood, lymph, skin, kidneys, and lungs – supporting them with herbs and nurtraceutricals.

This is total body detoxification.

When the liver is overburdened with toxins, it is unable to do it’s job and toxins are allowed to travel through the blood and lymph circulation to other organs of elimination: colon, kidneys, lungs and skin. For this reason, it is best to begin a general cleanse that is designed to support all of these organs simultaneously, with special emphasis on the liver and colon. My company offers a variety of cleansing kits which include herbs that provide support for all organs and systems of elimination.

For example, an effective herbal cleansing formula could include ingredients such as:

  • Milk Thistle
  • Dandelion
  • Beet
  • Artichoke leaf
  • Mullein, an expectorant
  • Burdock
  • Corn silk
  • Red clover
  • Larch gum

In addition to the colon cleansing herbs listed above, a total body cleanse formula should contain….

  • cape aloe,
  • rhubarb,
  • burdock,
  • or triphala to simulate intestinal peristalsis
  • and magnesium hydroxide to regulate water in the bowel.

It is very important that the colon functions properly or it will not be capable of eliminating toxins from the liver.

And without eliminating the toxins from your liver, they will recirculate, and start the problem all over again.

Fiber is another important component of an effective cleansing program. Cleansing stimulates the liver to release toxins into the bile, which is then secreted back into the digestive tract (via the gallbladder). It is necessary to ingest extra fiber for these toxins to be absorbed and removed through bowel elimination.

One of the best fiber supplements is flax, as it is about 50 percent soluble and 50 percent insoluble fiber. Soluble fiber absorbs the toxins, and insoluble fiber sweeps the colon. Flax is also available in organic (pesticide free) form, which is a plus. Unless severe constipation is an issue, never do a cleansing program without adding fiber for support to pick up and eliminate the toxins. If constipation is an issue, fiber can be added after bowel elimination is regulated.

Step Two: Elimination of Micro-organisms…..

This doesn’t say anything about how much, how long, or quantities. So it isn’t really a very helpful article. For someone who is not familiar with this idea, it doesn’t make much sense.
