Mistake #6 – Not incorporating High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) into their Aerobic Exercise Programs
I just hope that the understanding and acceptance of the importance and value of High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) does not take as long as it has for resistance training (exercising with weights). To be honest, we don’t have that time anymore. Our children…and most adults too, for that matter…are already too far behind to waste any more time.
But here we come to another problem. Many proponents of HIIT are still pushing programs that are better suited to athletes. Some are even saying that there is no place anymore for traditional aerobics. This just isn’t true and it isn’t going to work for the vast majority of people.
Some proponents of HIIT talk about 30 minutes of very long periods of maximal intensity in their programs. Believe me, one minute of maximal intensity is grueling…more is inhuman. I advocate much shorter periods which are ‘doable’ for anyone who does not have a life-threatening medical condition. Because of the warm-up and ‘keep-breathing-hard’ resistance training technique, my workouts result in 45-60 minutes of combined resistance training, HIIT, and traditional aerobics…all in the same session. You can’t get more efficient than that.
For exercisers who are already in reasonably good condition, this translates into only 2-3 structured workout sessions per week. This leaves weekends and 2-3 other days in the week free for family activities and for all those fun ‘exercise activities’ such as biking, tennis, golf, scuba diving, surfing, swimming…whatever turns you on! And the great thing about incorporating Quality Exercise and Quality Aerobics into your life is that these will make you much more proficient at all your ‘exercise activities’ too. It’s another win-win situation.
In conclusion, there are two thoughts that will put you and keep you on the right track to true health and fitness. If you keep these two principles foremost in your health and exercise planning, you will have nothing to worry about.
[box type=”important”]1. “No pain…no gain†is incorrect. It should be “No brain…no gain†because a sensible understanding of exercise and health-building nutrition is necessary in order to be successful at exercise and health-building nutrition. You cannot be successful at something that you know little or nothing about…so read, study, question and…above all…use your common sense. 2. If you take care of your health, the fat will take care of itself. So use Quality Exercise and develop a health-building nutrition plan. [/box]
