Experiences of a modern Jive class and discovering that it could be more than just an exercise class.
Getting Started with Ceroc
I have been intending to go to Ceroc classes for ages but the distance to the classes combined with the usual excuses (Oooh Iâ€™ll just go home and sit down for 5 minutes first) meant that months crept by before I finally took the plunge.
I decided to join a weekend workshop for my first taste of Modern Jive as I was assured that this was a sure fired way to learn the basic moves fast. As someone who needs a bit of practice to get something right I though that this was the way to go.
The workshop ran from 11am-3pm on Sunday. I was still able to have a lie in and relax before heading to the class.
The teacher Simon was very welcoming and put us all at ease before the class started. There were 5 women and 5 men at the workshops, all of different ages and walks of life. There was a married couple, some recently divorced ladies, a few guys in their early 20â€™s and a couple who were due to marry in a few weeks time. Each of the other dancers had been to Ceroc classes before, so had some experience. I was the only complete novice. Eek!
My fears were unfounded however as Simon instantly took me under his wing. The class started with some basic lessons in pressure and balance. Essential for working together as a team and dancing well. These simple lessons were invaluable as they teach you how to react to your partner. Modern Jive, as with many partner dance styles is led by the man so its important for him to be able to use the pressure of his hands and body to move his partner. Itâ€™s also important for the woman to react to his directions rather than trying to take charge! I spent most of the first few hours being told to stop trying to control the dance. When I finally relaxed and allowed myself to be led my dancing improved tenfold. My problem was anticipating the next move, which in fact would be impossible if you were to dance freestyle with a partner you didnâ€™t know!
Getting the Hang of Ceroc
As the day progressed we worked our way through a number of beginners moves, changing partners after a minute or two. This was great as dancing with each of the men gave me experience of the different styles and potential problems you can encounter. Obviously dancing with certain people was more pleasurable than others but learning together and helping each other to perfect a move was a great icebreaker and by the lunch break we were all getting on well.
Modern Jive for Socializing
I had a chance to chat with each of the other students and found that they had lots of different reasons for attending Ceroc classes. Some were looking to improve their fitness in a fun way, the guys were bored of the pub and wanted to get out and do something fun. They also thought it would be a great way to improve their confidence with women. One couple was looking for a social activity that they could do together, whilst the other wanted to impress friends and family with a fantastic dance performance at their upcoming wedding.
I realized that Ceroc could not only be a great way to keep fit, which had been my personal reason for going, but that it was actually a fantastic social activity too, both as a single person or as a couple.
A great way to meet new people and gain confidence
I was really pleased that the men had recognized Ceroc as a great opportunity to meet women. A man who knows how to dance is extremely desirable to many women and too many are scared to try, fearful of what their peers may think of them. As Ceroc is a dance that is generally led by men it was great to see these guys really keen to improve and become good dancers.
In conclusion, I really enjoyed my day Ceroc dancing. The style of the workshop and teaching style really allowed us all to progress quickly. I left with a sense of achievement, and a desire to practice the moves that I had learnt at another event soon. I will certainly consider booking a place on the next workshop. I will also make the effort to attend a Ceroc evening class and freestyle soon. Perhaps I will take some girlfriends with me, or maybe try to persuade the boyfriend to give it a whirl.
