Foods to Consume when Stressed

With today’s rapid lifestyles, stress and tension inevitably build up and adversely affect our well-being. However, different people react in different ways to stress. Some people tend to lose their appetite, while others tend to binge in order to reduce their stress levels. While many people turn to comfort foods, such as fried or oily foods during periods of stress, there are many health alternatives which are required by the body to cope during such times.

Milk: Milk is rich in calcium, proteins and many useful vitamins and antioxidants. If you are on a weight loss diet program, you can substitute regular milk with skimmed milk which contains less than 1% fat. Calcium also helps improve muscle contraction and helps prevent muscle-related injuries. Milk also contains B-vitamins which are useful in reducing stress-related attributes, such as depression and mood swings.

Fruits and low-fat cheese: Fruits have the maximum amount of varies vitamins and antioxidants. For example oranges are rich in vitamin C which helps reduce harmful chemicals that are released in the body when we are stressed. In addition, fruits are ideal for those on a weight loss diet program as they are rich in fibre which means that they take longer to digest. This allows you to feel fuller for longer periods of time, so you don’t binge eat.  Low-fat cheese has good amounts of protein which helps muscles stay healthy.

Asparagus: Asparagus is very beneficial during periods of stress. It is rich in folic acid which helps reduce stress and mood swings. It also has many B vitamins which are known to help you feel happier and reduce tension. It is also low in calories and another food that is ideal for fitness conscious individuals following any weight loss diet program. You can cook them in olive oil to further enhance their health benefits.

Almonds:  Some of us tend to munch on small snacks while we are running from place to place or when we are in the middle of some highly stressful work. The chewing action helps reduce stress levels, and almonds are a great food to nibble on. They are full of vitamins E and B which are ideal stress busters. In addition, almonds are great for improving skin texture and hair lustre.

Tea: Herbal teas are another great source of flavonoids and antioxidants. These ingredients help reduce levels of the hormone cortisol in our bodies. Cortisol is the hormone that is produced during high stress periods. Teas are available in various flavours, such as green, jasmine, mint etc. They help soothe ad calm the nerves ad contain significantly less amounts of caffeine that coffee, so they won’t keep you up at night either.

In addition to the above, leading an overall healthy lifestyle is also essential for reducing stress. Do regular exercise, get plenty of sleep, drink lots of water and follow a balanced weight loss diet program.
