Harlequin Type Ichthyosis Information in Children

The Harlequin disease is a condition that happens to children during the time that they were born into this world.  It is a skin disease that has a characteristic of keratin layers that are thicker than the normal. The children who suffer from this condition are known to have diamond shape and massive scales that are reddish in hue.

This condition will limit the movement of the child and will give them a higher risk for bacterial invasion which will lead to fatal infection if not prevented earlier.

Causes of Harlequin Type Ichthyosis in Children

1. Genetic Carriers

2. Mutation of the Genes

According to the research conducted, the children who have this condition are known to have a gene mutation of ABCA 12 gene. This kind of gene mutation is known to not allow the fats to enter the top most layer of the epidermis of the child.

Risk Factors of Children with Harlequin Type Ichthyosis

Those who are afflicted with the Harlequin disease condition are at risk for the following health problems that may cause hazard to one’s health. Such of these risk factors includes:

  • Dehydration
  • Having problems with managing losing of water
  • Cracked skin
  • Infection
  • Difficulty or problems with breathing

Diagnosing Harlequin Type Ichthyosis in Pregnant Women

When a woman is in her pregnancy state, her child may be able to be detecting that it has Harlequin Ichthyosis by undergoing the following tests:

  • Fetal Skin Biopsy
  • Amniocentesis
  • Ultrasound using 3D

By undergoing such examination, the pregnant woman would be able to visualize what to expect with her child. Also, it is by such examination that one is preparing herself with the possibilities that are laid down to her by her physician.

Harlequin Type Ichthyosis Prognosis

Before children who are born with the diagnosis of Harlequin Ichthyosis, do not survive long enough. But now, with the advancement of technologies the longest living person who is diagnosed with the disease condition healthily lived up to 26 years of age. Thanks to the progression of the methods and plans that are made available by the technological advancement in the medical field. Hence, there is still hope for them.
