A Look at Some Innovative Medical Devices

While the average person probably does not pay attention to the latest innovations in medical equipment, there have been some exciting developments in the last few decades.  A complete list would go on for pages, so we will instead focus on three widespread and intriguing devices: laser liposuction devices, medical percussors, and ion therapy systems.

Laser Liposuction

Laser healthcare is a particularly important breakthrough because it results in painless, risk-free alternatives to various types of surgeries.  Laser liposuction is the most notable of these uses.  Rather than having to be cut open and have fat sucked from the body, the patient is subjected to a low level laser, which travels through the skin seeking out fat cells to empty.  The process is very simple: the patient lies down on one side while a low level laser (or “cold” laser) is shined onto his or her body.

The laser does not cut the skin, but rather travels through the epidermis seeking out fat cells, as described above.  The fatty contents of the cell are liquefied by the laser; they then leak out and are expelled from the system through normal bodily functions.  This process is repeated over the course of several sessions, and unlike standard liposuction, there is no down time, so the patient can return to his or her daily activities immediately.  Also unlike surgical liposuction, there are no side effects such as sagging, lumpy, discolored skin and there is no need for anesthesia.

Medical Percussors

Medical percussors are medical devices that create repeated vibrations to alleviate muscle pain and release chest congestion caused by built up mucus and cystic fibrosis.  Percussors function by breaking up scar tissue and adhesions in the body’s fascia, a cause of restricted motion or pain.  Fascia and bones are capable of carrying an electrical current that allows a percussor to break down the constricted and knotted fascia, relieving the problem.

Ion Therapy

Ion therapy systems can facilitate the body’s natural homeostasis help in detoxification processes.  Sweating is the body’s natural detoxification system, but not many people have the opportunity to sufficiently sweat out toxins, short of going to a sauna.  Handheld ion therapy systems can circumvent this necessity by ionizing bath water to send out a current that expels toxins from your body, giving you all the benefits of a sauna with a simple footbath.  Due to the prevalence of toxins and chemicals in foods, household products, and even the air around us, everyone would benefit from an ion therapy device.

We use Proslimelt at work – a similar device to laser liposuction, except it uses Ultrasound waves to break down the fat cells. I’ve not tried it yet, but after reading your article I really should!
