The Six W’s – Work Will Win When Wishing Won’t

“The Six W’s: Work will win when wishing won’t.” -Todd Blackledge

We sit. We think. We wish.  These are what I find to be the biggest problems with getting fit. As a personal trainer for 10 years and a participant in sports and fitness for over 25 years, I have seen so many of these chronic issues destroy fitness goals before they even begin.

We sit when we can stand. How many times do you just sit around doing nothing or watching television and wonder why we’re overweight? How many times do we sit instead of stand on the bus? How often do we sit while at the gym?

Did you know that standing expends more calories than sitting? If you were to just stand up during some of these things you would be changing your life. Get up and do something instead of sitting in front of the computer or television. Stand up on the bus…challenge your balance and get more out of your muscles. Don’t even think about sitting down at the gym? Stand up in between sets. Squat down if you need to, but by all means don’t sit!

We think and don’t do. How many times do you think about going to the gym but never go? How often do you think about eating the right thing, but you don’t? How frequently do you think about taking the stairs instead of the escalator but don’t? There’s nothing to it but to do it. Need more encouragement, get a Nike logo and place it on your fridge so that you see “Just Do It” more often. Thinking has yet to turn into enough calorie expenditure to help you reach your fitness goals. I can’t count how many times I’ve heard a person say, “I was thinking about doing…” but they didn’t do it. Turn those thoughts into actions and get your ass moving!

We wish on stars. Wishing is for babies and fools. There is no such thing as a genie in a lamp and wishes don’t come true unless you make them come true. You have to put a little energy into the fire for it to burn and so put a little work in to get the results you desire. Nothing is gained without investment. The lottery requires investment, business ventures and stock gains require investment and relationships require investments. So what makes you think that your body doesn’t require you to invest some hard work into it to achieve what you want?

Hey Rich, thanks again for the motivational posts! A little reminder or push certainly helps. Finding little ways to get more active during the day can have a significant impact over a long period of time.
