What Is Belly Fat?

Belly fat is the common name for central obesity or abdominal obesity. It is distinguished by the accumulation of excess visceral and subcutaneous fat in the peritoneal and abdomen regions.  In colloquial terms, many people now refer to ‘belly fat’ as a muffin top.

Because belly fat increases the risks of developing certain diseases such as type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases, it is often the target of many health diets and exercise plans. In addition, belly fat is one of the major indications of weight gain.

The development of belly fat depends on genetic and environmental factors. Some people are more predisposed to obesity than others. However, it is possible to avoid or reduce the amount of fat accumulated with the right diet and regular exercise even in people with genetic predisposition to this condition.


The Muffin Top

It should be noted that while belly fat is clearly visible, fat accumulated around the internal organs are tucked out of sight but are more dangerous.

Basically, belly fat and all other signs of obesity develop from net energy imbalance. This energy balance is the difference between the number of calories ingested and the number of calories burnt as energy for muscular activities.

Ideally, burning more calories than the amount ingested from foods and drinks should promote weight loss and help get rid of belly fat. However, there is more to this simple caloric relationship.

However, it is clear that obesity has become more prevalent as urbanization encourages high-caloric diets and low physical activity.

The nature and characterization of belly fat differ among men and women. First, men are more prone to storing excess fat in the abdomen region, and therefore, they are more susceptible to belly fat. Women, on the other hand, usually store excess fat in the hips, thighs and buttocks.

In a way, the distribution of excess fat in women supports reproductive functions. However, when women reach menopause, estrogen production falls and the excess fat stored in the hips, thighs and buttocks move to the belly.
