Tips to Keep Your Digestive Tract Healthy

Well, to start out I have to say I have a personal interest in this topic. Two members of my family have suffered from digestive issues for years. They thought that there was nothing they could really do about it outside of taking prescription medication and going to the doctor all the time. However in the past few months they have turned this idea on its head and are living healthy happy and issue free lives. Here are some tips that helped them out:

  1. Check for allergies – The first step that they took was to be tested for allergies. Although one of them went to the doctor for testing (and found nothing), the other one decided to cut foods out of her diet and see which ones were affecting her health. It turns out that she was lactose intolerant and has now switched to soy products. A simple solution that took away some of her symptoms!
  2. Decrease fat and salt –Another diet change was a decrease in fat and salt. Due to other health conditions she was required to reduce her fat and salt intake. Once she reduced her salt intake her bloating came down quite a bit, as did her blood pressure. She had to stop taking her blood pressure medication! She reduced the fat by cutting down on butter and desserts and red meats. Reducing the fat she ate also helped her to have more regular bowel movements and firmer stools.
  3. Eat more whole foods –As a part of reducing fat and salt she had to avoid many of the prepackaged foods that she had been eating. Things like canned soups, lunch meat, butter spreads, and baked desserts are some examples of high fat, high salt foods. She turned to whole foods such as fresh and frozen vegetables, fruits and whole grains. These also helped her bowls become more regular and although it initially aggravated her gas issues, a solution was found.
  4. Take a probiotic –Both the women started to take a probiotic once a day, plus one took a Beano before any meals with problem foods. Her once a day probiotic helped her bowels, and the Beano (an enzyme-based dietary supplement) she took before meals with fresh vegetables prevented the gas and discomfort she had been feeling.
  5. Increase activity levels –Last but not least they both started working out more often. Although health conditions prevented them from running laps or doing jumping jacks, they both found ways to exercise and enjoy doing it. Bike riding is an activity they love to do on good weather days, and gardening is another. By just staying active they helped their digestive tract to stay regular and able to function normally for the first time in many years.

Many times conditions we think we just have to live with actually have simple solutions. If you have been living with digestive issues why don’t you try some of these simple tips? They certainly can’t hurt you and they might even cure what ails you!

    I would have to agree with this article mostly & mainly. I have had Ulcerative Colitis & now Crohns Disease since I was 14, am 33 now. I spent years trying to control my UC with drugs and surgeries to no avail.
    Since my diagnosis of Crohns last year in June I refused all meds or surgery and took the healthy route…I lost 60lbs (I was way overweight), I stopped eating fast food, fried food, processed food, soda, food containing a list of ingredients I can’t pronounce or lists with a billion ingredients and I can’t tell you how amazing I feel without all of that crap. Instead I concentrate on anti inflammatory foods like salmon, nuts, green tea with ginger & honey, lots of fruits & veggies. My life is 180 deg turned around for the better!
