Top 10 Cereals That Contain GMOs
GM Foods in Your Cereal
Unless stated on the label, all cereal products sold in the US contain one or more GM food crop.
Given the fact that the majority of the corn grown in the country are genetically modified, there is a very high likelihood that your breakfast cereal is filled with GM corn.
In a recent survey of the most popular cereals sold in the US, the 10 most likely ones to contain GM corn are:
- General Mills Cocoa Puffs
- General Mills Corn Chex
- General Mills Kix
- General Mills Honey Nut Chex
- Kellog’s Frosted Flakes
- Kellog’s Corn Flakes
- Kellog’s Corn Pops
- Quaker Honey Graham Oh’s
- Kashi Heart to Heart
- Barbara’s Bakery Puffins Peanut Butter
While these are popular brands of breakfast cereals, there are many more cereals containing GM corn being sold and these include some cereals carrying “natural†labels.
In fact, manufacturers of breakfast cereals know that most consumers shop for natural products. Therefore, they label their products as natural even when it contains wholly synthetic ingredients and even include GM food crops.
Some breakfast cereals start out as natural as claimed on the label. However, the manufacturers may switch to GM corn to increase their profit margins and yet retain the “natural†labels.
Good examples of such “all natural†products now containing GM corn are Peace Cereal from Heartside Food Solutions and different products from Barbara’s Bakery.
Therefore, you should not trust the “natural†label carried by food products any longer.
Big brands with cereals labeled natural but wholly containing GM grains include:
- Kashi
- General Mills
- Nutritious Living
- Mother’s
- Bumper
- Hi-Lo
- GoLean
In 2011, a class-action suit was brought against Kashi and Kellogs for knowingly misleading the public in labeling its GM corn-containing products as natural.
The deceit and substitution of GM corn in place of natural corn extend beyond product labels. Even members of the Non-GMO Project (a non-profit organization committed to sourcing and selling non-GMO products as well as educating the public on the dangers of GM foods) are known to include GM crops in their products.
Barbara’s Bakery’s Puffins and Whole Foods’ Corn Flakes are two breakfast cereals from Non-GMO Project members containing more than 50% GM corn.
