Understanding Appetite – a Simple Way to Eat Healthier

Eating healthily doesn’t have to mean going on a diet. Even if you need to lose weight you might find that getting to know your appetite better is the best way to make sure you can eat healthily more often.

Difference between Appetite and Levels of Hunger

Plenty of people make the mistake of assuming appetite and hunger mean the same thing, but this isn’t true. In fact they are very different indeed, and if you can understand the difference you’ll find it a lot easier to eat more sensibly and healthily.

If you say “I feel hungry” you’re basically saying you need food. Food gets rid of the hunger and gives your body the sustenance it needs. Appetite is a totally different subject altogether. After all, we refer to things as being appetizing to us, i.e. they look good and smell good and appeal to our appetite.

So that’s lesson one, it is important to learn to recognize when you are hungry or just have a large appetite – the former is fine and when you are hungry you should absolutely eat. But if it is your appetite driving you to eat, you may be at risk of over eating.

How We Get Hungry

As we evolved we developed the mechanism of hunger to ensure that we got the calories we needed to function and grow. If we have plenty we crave less and our brains focus on other things; But if we haven’t eaten for a while we automatically go into hunger mode and our brains start telling us that we must get calories.

The practical result of this is that the hungrier you get, the more your brain wants calories, and that means that your appetite goes into overdrive and you start craving high energy, calorie dense foods – like cake, sweets and anything fattening.

How To Lose Weight Without Trying

The mistake that people on diets make is that they try to deny their hunger and inadvertently allow themselves to go into starvation mode. Now if you have truly fantastic will power you might be able to starve yourself thin, but chances are you will eventually give in, as your appetite gets the better of you… And besides, that wouldn’t be a healthy way to lose weight anyway.

The real key is to figure out which foods keep you full, you need to eat regularly and ensure that you never get hungry. Keep your appetite at bay by occasionally allowing yourself some tasty food, but never be a slave to your cravings. Obviously, finding healthy alternatives (like these tasty healthy cookies)  to your favorite foods will help too.

A Final Tip

In reality, getting hungry will happen, we can never eat exactly when we should do so every time – some times life gets in the way and after a long day at work you might suddenly realise how hungry you are on the way home.

The best thing you can do in this situation is realize that your appetite has been inflated by your body’s hunger mechanism. All you need to do is get some healthy food into you and as soon as you have the first mouth full your appetite will start to drop and you will suddenly get your will power back.

Will someone please cite me to the research that supports our bodies go into “starvation mode” if we miss meals or restrict food? Over what period of time? How are you defining “starvation mode?” Prison camp effects over many months, years? Or over the course of one/two days?
