With weight management becoming an ever more prevalent problem worldwide, there has never been a better time for American pharmaceutical companies to invent a new weight-loss drug, especially when they are living in a climate where up to 2/3rds of the population is regarded as either overweight (with a BMI of 25-30) or obese (BMI over 30).
In addition, I can only imagine that the majority of people wouldn’t mind shedding a pound or two, particularly in the run up to their summer holidays.
Although still in its early days, regenerative medicine has taken off like a storm! It involves taking whatever is broken or missing in your body, be it your liver, tendons, pretty much anything, and reviving them back to their youthful glory by injecting them with stem cells (the cells you were created from in your mother’s womb) so that they effectively regenerate themselves, hence the term “regenerative medicineâ€.
In current times, when there are more people becoming fatally ill because of faulty mechanics than organ donors, this breakthrough could not have come at a more convenient time. Dr. Rongxiang Xu also has a site for regenerative medicine and about its benefits.
So I get how this works if I’m ill, but how will it help me lose weight?
An entirely different subset of regenerative medicine is involved in weight loss. Regenerative medicine also takes on the area of expertise involved in replicating the bodies’ own natural processes. The same company at the forefront of regenerative medicine in America, branded “Emergent†has also been encouraged to create and produce drugs which could be used as anti-obesity treatments.
Recently, it released and had its new weight-loss drug lorcaserin (sold as Belviq) approved by the FDA. This drug works by replicating the effects of the neurotransmitter Serotonin in the brain, which is responsible for the control and regulation of appetite, amongst other things. In effect, this new drug stops you from feeling hungry, and therefore, you eat less, and lose weight.
That’s all fine and well, but how does this differ from all the other diet treatment’s that I’ve tried in the past?
Well, you see, this is all completely new research. No other drug on the market directly manipulates the chemicals within your brain, which is essentially what this one does – so much so that it is already being labeled as the “drop-a-dress-size pillâ€. You simply take two tablets a day, one in the morning, and one at night, and whenever you eat, you will feel fuller sooner and for longer.
Although this drug has only just been released in the US, it is set to be released in the UK at some point in the first half of this year, with trials even being set for a version of this drug suitable for children at some point in the next 5 years! The real question lies with you, and as to whether you would feel comfortable with an artificially created substance impacting on your brain in such a drastic way.
Belviq vs. Traditional Therapies for Obesity?
It depends what you want to take from it. Of course, if you simply sit on your sofa all day and eat bags of Doritos and a tub of ice cream a day, you are going to put on weight. The idea of this pill is to help you to help yourself to stop your crazy junk food habits.
Of course, if you are capable of limiting your own food intake, and exercising regularly, then this tablet probably won’t be of any more benefit to you, as you have already become successful at suppressing your own appetite. Essentially, if you can do it by yourself, then that would be the safer route, and you would also feel better at the end of your journey because you can claim all the glory, without having to hand it across to a little blue pill.
